Downloading music
Contrary to popular belief, there is such a thing
as free music downloads on the internet. However,
the legality of these downloads is another story.
First, let us assume that we are referring to
the popular MP3 files that are most commonly downloaded
off of the internet. The primary method in which
someone could download these music files involves
using peer-to-peer (P2P) network sharing programs.
Peer-to-peer network programs allow users to connect
to a network of hundreds of thousands of other
users. Each user on the network may search the
network, using the provided software, for songs
of their choice and download them at will. When
downloading a song, a user is actually downloading
it from other users, not from a company that supplies
the song. Therefore, the more users supplying
the song, the faster the download. Since this
method allows users to download anything that
another user may be sharing on his computer it
is a highly effective way of expanding one’s
music collection for free. However, this method
is usually used in an illegal manner.
If an unknown artist is seeking exposure to the
public and wants to offer his songs for download
to the general public, then the downloads of these
songs are not illegal. These artists commonly
offer MP3 downloads of their songs on their website
as well as the popular file sharing programs.
the vast majority of the songs downloaded are
the property of artists who are not willing to
offer their songs free for download over these
networks. The artist receives no compensation
if someone downloads one of his songs for free.
Therefore, these downloads become illegal and
have been creating a large public uproar.
In November of 1997, the No Electronic Theft Act
was passed. This act criminalizes these illegal
downloads even in cases where there is no financial
gain by doing so. Since then, the RIAA (Recording
Industry Association of America) has aggressively
sought to prosecute many individuals found guilty
of file sharing.
Free music downloads been widely disputed on both
sides. Therefore, it is safe to say that downloading
an artist’s work on these peer-to-peer networks
without consent of the artist or label may result
in monetary damages or jail time. While these
file sharing networks may be free to use, each
user must decide whether they want to risk these
consequences in order to download many of today’s
popular songs for free.

Mp3
MP3 is a popular digital audio
encoding and lossy compression format invented
and standardized in 1991 by a team of engineers
working in the framework of the ISO/IEC MPEG audio
committee under the chairmanship of Professor
Hans Musmann (University of Hannover - Germany).
It was designed to greatly reduce the amount of
data required to represent audio, yet still sound
like a faithful reproduction of the original uncompressed
audio to most listeners. In popular usage, MP3
also refers to files of sound or music recordings
stored in the MP3 format on computers.

MP3 is a compression format. It
provides a representation of pulse-code modulation-encoded
(PCM) audio data in a much smaller size by discarding
portions that are considered less important to
human hearing (similar to JPEG, a lossy compression
for images).
A number of techniques are employed in MP3 to
determine which portions of the audio can be discarded,
including psychoacoustics. MP3 audio can be compressed
with different bit rates, providing a range of
tradeoffs between data size and sound quality.
The MP3 format uses, at its heart, a hybrid transformation
to transform a time domain signal into a frequency
domain signal:
• 32-band polyphase quadrature filter
• 36 or 12 tap MDCT; size can be selected
independent for sub-band 0...1 and 2...31
• Aliasing reduction postprocessing
MP3 Surround, a version of the format supporting
5.1 channels for surround sound, was introduced
in December 2004. MP3 Surround is backward compatible
with standard stereo MP3, and file sizes are similar.
In terms of the MPEG specifications, AAC (Advanced
audio coding) from MPEG-4 is to be the successor
of the MP3 format, although there has been a significant
movement to create and popularize other audio
formats. Nevertheless, any succession is not likely
to happen for a significant amount of time due
to MP3's overwhelming popularity (MP3 enjoys extremely
wide popularity and support, not just by end-users
and software but by hardware such as DVD and CD
players).
